The PLUS. LGBTI+ Business Network is looking to contract a manager, based in Johannesburg, starting asap (ideally by no later than 17th February 2020).
ORGANISATION BACKGROUND
The PLUS. LGBTI+ Business Network aims to champion, promote, support and empower South African lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex [LGBTI] business owners and entrepreneurs with valuable opportunities to learn, network, do business and prosper, contributing to the redress of the structural and economic injustices of our past. PLUS intends to address scarce employment opportunities, and discrimination in the workplace of LGBTI people in South Africa, which are harmful to their wellbeing.
The strategic goals of the PLUS LGBTI Business Network are as follows:
• Advocacy for an enabling business environment and support for LGBTI business owners, opening space to normalize the environment – advocating for the inclusion of LGBTI businesses in the BBBEE codes
• Capacity Development of LGBTI businesses – including the provision of technical support, mentoring/coaching, training, access to opportunities and business networks
• Establishing linkages with networks of workplace LGBTI affinity groups who become internal champions of LGBTI inclusion in supply chains and employment.
• Promotion of supplier diversity, inclusive of LGBTI service providers.
• Accreditation of LGBTI suppliers.
• Establishing a database of LGBTI suppliers.
For 2020/2021, the key priority is consolidating the value offer for PLUS Business Network membership, mobilization of membership, fundraising, marketing, maintaining significant relations with members and partners, including dissemination of critical information to key stakeholders.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is a one year contract, with the possibility of extension, dependent on funding.
1. Key Tasks:
The manager’s tasks are largely linked to the provision of key support services aligned to the following 2020/2021 operational objectives:
A. Consolidation of PLUS as a critical LGBTI Business Network
• Strengthening and cementing relationships with existing and new PLUS members
o Arranging of and minute taking during PLUS meetings
o Communication with PLUS Committee Members
o Compiling reports of the PLUS events
o Follow up communication within relevant stakeholders (including prospective PLUS members) after PLUS events and meetings
o Supporting the development of the PLUS database
o Office administration
o Website maintenance
• Disaggregation of LGBTI suppliers on current PLUS database.
o Entrepreneurs with business ideas
o Informal businesses (income generating businesses)
o Formalised and registered businesses
B. Organisation of strategic stakeholder meetings and capacity development interventions.
• Organising and arranging strategic stakeholder meetings in provinces to drive recruitment and provide access to information and opportunities for LGBTI businesses.
• Exploring relevant opportunities to strengthen and support PLUS member businesses Supporting and managing events to drive enterprise development of PLUS members – capacity building of LGBTI businesses.
C. Workplace Affinity Groups
Workplace LGBTI affinity groups are important platforms to champion diversity and inclusion, including in company supply chains. It is therefore very important for PLUS to:
• Develop collaborative linkages with employee groups and for these platforms to promote the growth and development of workplace affinity groups
• Follow up on collaborations with the South African Workplace Equality Index – to explore areas of development within corporate (adds to BBBEE space) that could be supported by PLUS
D. Supplier Diversity
• Facilitating procurement opportunities for reliable LGBTI suppliers
• Vetting suppliers (collaboration with the South African Supply Diversity Council)
• Sensitisation and awareness-raising of Corporates on the context LGBTI SMMEs.
REQUIREMENTS
Administrative experience in a similar position for 3 years. Computer literacy, proficiency in English, and a professional demeanour. An understanding of the South African corporate / business environment as well as entrepreneurial, labour and LGBTI community issues and challenges. Experience in organising events. A B-Degree would be preferred. The ideal candidate needs to be a team player who can work independently but also in collaboration with others.
